The CCSA Western Cape branch recently hosted a Careers in Concrete and Civil Engineering day at the University of Cape Town, which saw speakers from across the civil industry, research to construction, to discuss their career path, experience, projects worked on, and lessons learned with the students.
The primary focus of these talks was to educate, inform and motivate the students to pursue a career in the very diverse civil engineering industry with an open mind and ready to learn…and work.
The speakers touched on the vastly different career paths that became available to them and their internal dialogues pursuing these opportunities. Having representation from all aspects of the industry, the speakers were able to identify and emphasise the diversity of the occupations available within the civil construction and concrete industry.
The event was attended by 20 professionals and roughly 80 undergraduate (3rd-4th year) and postgraduate students. After the formalities, the students, speakers, and event sponsors enjoyed snacks while engaging in informal discussions regarding the future and potential of engineers in South Africa.
A big thank you to UCT for the facilities and arrangements, the SAICE student body at UCT for their involvement and the speakers for their time and commitment to the next generation. We would also like to thank our sponsors, Zutari, Patterson & Cooke, M&D, Penetron and ASLA, without whom the event would not have been possible.
