Cement & Concrete SA Western Cape Committee hosted a site visit to Steenbras Dam.
The Steenbras Dam, now referred to as Steenbras Lower Dam, is a gravity concrete arch type dam located in the Hottentots-Holland mountains, above Gordons Bay. It is used for the Steenbras pumped-storage hydroelectricity scheme which supplements Cape Town’s electricity supply during periods of peak demand.
Speakers from UCT and CoCT presented on the daily operations of the hydroelectrical plant combined with some of the current challenges they have with aging infrastructure and the ongoing research on ASR.
The site visit was combined with a tour of the facility showing the attendees the various aspects of the hydroelectrical powerplant as well as practical examples of ASR. Prof. Alexander highlighted the importance of correlating laboratory test results which are often accelerated vs actual on-site monitoring of the expansion of the structure. This will help the CoCT make a well-informed decision when it comes to maintenance planning and the best repair methods for the structure.
After the formalities the delegates enjoyed a light lunch and discussed the necessities of innovation in concrete, possible repair and reconstruction methods, and the management of concrete infrastructure.
A big thank you to CoCT for the tour and the host of the event as well as Prof. Mark Alexander for insights into the complexities of ASR.
Bronze Member, Penetron Africa, kindly sponsored the event.
