The Cement & Concrete SA Western Cape Committee hosted a civil engineering career day at the University of Cape Town that saw speakers from across the civil industry – from research to construction – discuss their career path, experience and current responsibilities.
The primary focus of these talks was to educate and inform the students of what to expect when they get to the industry after qualifying and what the different career paths available to them are. Having representation from all spheres of the industry, the speakers were able to identify and emphasize the diversity and interdependence of these occupations with concrete being the common denominator that binds us together.
The event was attended by 15 professionals and 134 students ranging from 1st – 4th year. After the formalities, the students, and speakers (professionals from the industry) enjoyed snacks while engaging in informal yet informative discussions regarding their occupations as well as the challenges within, and highlights of their careers. The speakers represented government (CoCT), construction (M&D), concrete supply (Lafarge), construction chemicals (Sika) and research (UCT).
A big thank you to UCT for the facilities, the student body for their arrangements, the speakers for their time and commitment to the next generation as well as the sponsors on the evening: Sika, Chryso, Xypex, M & D and Penetron Africa, without whom this event would not have been possible.
