The CCSA Western Cape branch recently hosted a careers in concrete – civil engineering day at the University of Stellenbosch that saw speakers from across the civil industry – from research to construction – discuss their career path, experience and lessons learned with the students.
The primary focus of these talks was to educate, inform and motivate the students to pursue a career in the very diverse civil engineering industry with an open mind and ready to learn…and work.
The speakers covered lessons learned from their studies, first jobs and touched on continuous development and studies later in life. They also touched on the vastly different career paths that became available to them and their internal dialogues pursuing these opportunities. Having representation from all aspects of the industry, the speakers were able identify and emphasize the diversity of the occupations available within the civil construction and concrete industry.
The event was attended by 15 professionals and roughly 80 students ranging from 1st-4th year. After the formalities, the students, speakers, and event sponsors enjoyed some snacks while engaging in informal discussions regarding the future and potential of engineers in South Africa.
A big thank you to SUN for the facilities and arrangements, the SAICE student body at SUN for their involvement and the speakers for their time and commitment to the next generation. Also thank you to our sponsors Sika, M&D, Penetron and ASLA without whom the event would not have been possible.
